Awards:
Ameresco has been honored for its work in energy efficiency and design from
such organizations as the Association of Energy Engineers, ASHRAE, the U.S.
Department of Energy, and the United Illuminating Society. Awards have been
received for a range of projects, from multi-family housing developments, to
industrial facilities, to office buildings and government facilities.
Recent projects:
Hill Air Force Base in Ogden was the first Federal agency to award a project
delivery order under the BAMF Super ESPC contract. In September 2003, the base
awarded Ameresco the delivery order to install and maintain a landfill gas to
energy (LFGTE) system, along with several other traditional energy conservation
measures (ECMs). The LFGTE project will produce 1.1 MW of electricity that will
be purchased by Utah Power or in emergency situations will be utilized to
operate Hill’s Command Center.
Use of savings guarantees:
Savings guarantees are a key component of Ameresco’s performance contracting
philosophy. The goal is to deliver a project that is entirely self-funded:
Ameresco provides the capital to upgrade the facility and for annual repair and
maintenance needs, and the cost of the project is paid from the energy savings
delivered by the improvements.
As an integral part of its energy savings contracts, Ameresco guarantees a
specific level of energy cost savings over the full term of the contract. This
guarantee insures that the total costs of the project will be recovered within a
specified timeframe, protecting the customer from financial exposure. During any
given year during the contract term, should there be a cumulative shortfall in
energy cost savings, Ameresco makes up this difference to the customer. Payments
can be in the form of a check or a credit against future billings, at the
customer’s option.
Financing options:
Ameresco offers its customers a variety of financing options related to
energy savings projects. The first step in determining the appropriate financing
structure is identifying and evaluating the customer’s financing objectives. If
the objective is to obtain funds at the lowest cost, a tax-exempt lease may be
the most appropriate choice; for example, for most public entities. If a
customer is looking to shift risk of operation and maintenance, a Utility
Services Agreement may be the best option. Ameresco has utilized the following
financing avenues in funding energy transactions for its customers: tax-exempt
leases; operating leases; capital leases; value leases; shared savings; utility
services; and certificates of participation.
