Utah Power
offers five programs to businesses that are looking to
improve the energy efficiency of their facilities and
operations and save on their energy expenses. These
programs are targeted to both new construction and
retrofit projects completed by commercial, industrial,
and irrigation customers.
Through
Energy FinAnswer, Utah Power offers high-quality
engineering services and cash incentives to help
businesses build energy efficiency into new construction
as well as retrofits of existing equipment. Commercial,
industrial, and agricultural customers embarking on any
size new construction or major renovation project, any
size industrial project, or commercial retrofit projects
at facilities larger than 20,000 square feet in size are
eligible. Incentives of $0.12 per kilowatt-hour of
annual energy savings plus $50 per kilowatt of monthly
on-peak demand savings are offered.
The
FinAnswer Express program offers customers
incentives and technical expertise resources for
lighting, motors, and HVAC equipment upgrades that
increase the electric energy efficiency of a facility
and which exceed building energy code requirements. Both
new construction and retrofit projects are eligible for
this program, which requires customers to purchase and
install pre-qualified lighting, motor, and HVAC
equipment, for which an incentive check or credit is
received, typically after installation has been
verified.
Utah Power offers a
Self-Direction Credit program to its customers with
annual usage of more than 5,000,000 kilowatt-hours or
1,000 kilowatts. Large customers who pursue
self-investments in energy efficiency and related
demand-side management projects can receive credits of
up to 80% of eligible costs. Simple payback periods for
these projects must be between one and five years. The
Self-Direction Credit is applied against 100% of the
customer’s monthly Customer Efficiency Services charge
on their electric bill, until the entire credit is used.
It is recommended that customers pre-qualify any
proposed Self-Direction Credit projects, though
pre-qualification is not required.
A facility “check up” through Utah Power’s
Recommissioning program is another great way to save
energy. Recommissioning an existing building helps to
restore the original intended operating performance of
the structure, performance which is likely to degrade
over time and thus result in increased energy costs. A
free expert building analysis can help lower energy
costs by optimizing a building’s energy use. Incentives
are available to reduce the implementation costs of
recommissioning measures if the simple payback is
greater than one year. By working hand-in-hand with
energy experts, employees can increase their knowledge
of the efficient operation of building systems, and keep
a facility up to snuff over time.
Load Lightener is a load management program for
commercial and industrial customers whose lighting load
is typically 70 killowatts or more and have lights on
for 16 or more hours each day. Participating customers
receive free installation and maintenance of EnergySaver
lighting technology, which reduces the active power
supplied to the lamps of ballasted lighting systems
without abrupt voltage changes or noticeably affecting
visible light. The EnergySaver technology will result in
steady-state energy savings of 3 percent of the lighting
load. In exchange for these savings, participating
customers agree to allow Utah Power to reduce the power
consumed by the lighting systems to a pre-determined
level of approximately 25 percent on select summer
afternoons.

of these Utah Power programs. In addition to the
programs described above, Utah Power has organized
several energy efficiency alliances, whose members are
vendors, contractors, or distributors who are involved
in promoting energy efficiency in Utah. The links below
